United Airlines Resuming Flights To China In July

After suspending service to China in February due to the coronavirus outbreak, United Airlines will resume flights to the country in early July.

Effective July 8, United will operate flights between San Francisco and Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport via Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, twice a week. The flights from San Francisco to Shanghai will depart on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The return flights will arrive in California from Shanghai on Thursdays and Sundays.

Before coronavirus pandemic placing nearly all of the airline industry on “pause,” United had been the largest U.S. carrier to serve China, with five flights per day between Shanghai and its hubs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York/Newark.

“United’s service to mainland China has been a point of pride for our employees and customers for more than 30 years,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network and Alliances. “Resuming service to Shanghai from the United States is a significant step in rebuilding our international network.”

On June 25, Delta was the first U.S. carrier to resume flights between America and China since the pandemic began.

CNN reported on June 16 that spokesperson for American Airlines said that its flights are scheduled to resume to Beijing and Shanghai in October.

Even if the number of flights between the U.S. and China isn’t anywhere near what we were previously used to, any new addition is another step towards “normal.” For that, I’m grateful.
