Jim Cantore is an American meteorologist who’s best known as an on-air personality for The Weather Channel. Whenever a particularly bad bout of weather (blizzard, hurricane, etc.) is predicted to hit a certain part of the country, Jim Cantore is sent there to cover it. So there’s a running joke in the United States that you never want to see Jim Cantore in your town when “weather” is coming, because chances are it’s going to be BAD.
Orlando, on the other hand, has its own measuring stick to determine how bad something is, and it just got pulled out.
The Rosen hotels and resorts have lowered their prices.
Harris Rosen has been an Orlando-based hotelier since 1973. The history of how he went from a convention salesman in New York City in the early ’60s to being one of the most powerful people in Orlando is pretty fascinating – you can read more about it here.
There are 7 hotels in Central Florida with Rosen’s name on them (although he also owns a Clarion Inn that doesn’t have his name attached). All are in the tourist corridor, most on International Drive. They run the gamut from motor lodges to the 4-star Rosen Shingle Creek.
During times of trouble, Harris Rosen traditionally lowers the prices of his hotels so those who need affordable shelter have access to it. He’s done it for countless tropical storms and hurricanes over the years – not just storms that affect Central Florida, but anywhere in the state.
And as reported by Attractions Magazine, it looks like he’s just done it again, with special “distressed” room rates that run between $39 to $69 per night (plus taxes).

The decreased rates are available to anyone – first responders, hospitality industry employees, students, or anyone else who’s displaced due to the challenges and travel restrictions placed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and is in need of a clean place to stay.
The rates are available through May 10, for stays through December 20, 2020.
