The Brand New Shopping Outlet In New York City

When you think of New York City, most people think of stuff in Manhattan. Times Square. The Statue of Liberty. Central Park.

But some people think of something else. Shopping. Not so much the crap shops that line the tourist areas (but hey, where else are you going to find a bobblehead of whatever current politician giving you the finger?), but outlet malls.

The problem was that the two outlet malls closest to NYC were a royal pain to get to. If you didn’t have access to a car, you’d have to take bus from the Port Authority to get to either Woodbury Common Premium Outlets (it’s about an hour north of Manhattan) or to Jersey Gardens (it’s about 35 minutes southwest of Manhattan). And, of course, you’d have to pay $6.50 per person in each direction to take those buses.

Welp, a brand new outlet in New York City has just changed that narrative, and it’s just a 25 minute free ferry ride away.

Empire Outlets has opened in Staten Island, NY, just a few hundred feet away from where the Staten Island Ferry docks. It’s already doing very well, with over 165,000 customers visiting on their opening weekend!

The 340,000 square foot outlet is slated to open in phases and right now they’re in Phase 1. The first few stores opened their doors in mid-May and many more will join them between now and the summer. According to Empire Outlet’s website, the following stores either are now open or will open soon:

You should also be able to soon find the following restaurants and eateries at Empire Outlet:

• Bake Culture
• Haagen-Dazs
• Mamoun’s Falafel
• MRKTPL, Staten Island’s first ever artisanal food hall
• Shake Shack
• Starbucks
• Wasabi
• Wetzel’s Pretzels

And many other stores and restaurants will open in the upcoming months.

On the weekends, Empire Outlets also offers food trucks, street performers, live music and more.

Empire Outlets is open from 10am to 9pm every day.

How to get there

 

Take the (FREE!) Staten Island Ferry from Whitehall Terminal in downtown Manhattan to St. George Terminal on Staten Island (make sure to get a look at the Statue of Liberty [she’ll be on your right] on your way there). From there, go outside and walk to the street (towards Richmond Terrace) and Empire Outlets will be on your immediate right. It’s less than a five minute walk.
