Chase Sapphire Reserve Premium Rental Car Benefits

The Sapphire Reserve is Chase’s premium travel credit card. It provides an unmatched combination of points earning and travel insurance coverage. When it comes to travel perks included with the card, it’s right in the pack with other cards offering a Priority Pass membership and Global Entry reimbursement. Many of the other travel benefits supplied by the card come from it being a VISA Infinite card, some of them being premier level membership with several rental car companies.

If you’re interested in signing up for a Chase Sapphire Reserve or just want to hear more about the card, check out our full review.

To find out what benefits the Sapphire Reserve provides, it’s necessary to log into your Chase account. If you have more than one Chase card, click on the Sapphire Reserve and then open the drop-down box “Things you can do”

Clicking on card benefits takes you a page showing several benefits of the card:

This is also the same page where you’ll apply for your Priority Pass membership. but right now we’re looking for rental cars.

National Emerald Club Executive

National is one of the car rental companies I’ve dealt with for the longest. Just by signing up for their Emerald Club, you get to skip the counter and pick any car in the aisle as long as you reserve a mid-size.

If you’re an Emerald Executive Club member, you get to pick your car from the Executive Aisle. While these are nicer cars, don’t expect too much of an upgrade beyond the next level sedan.

Avis Preferred Plus

Avis Preferred Plus is one step above normal Avis status and provides discounts and upgraded to members.

There’s a link to sign up for a membership, but if you already have an Avis Wizard number, you can just go straight to this link.

Silvercar

Silvercar is one of our favorite companies to rent a car from but we just never seem to get the chance. There’s no sort of loyalty program with Silvercar, as everyone gets the same brand of car, an Audi. Screen Shot 2019-07-18 at 4.27.54 PMSilvercar does offer discounts to Visa Infinite cardholders

Cardholders must validate card eligibility and register at https://www.silvercar.com/partners/vinfinite to receive up to 30% (with a guaranteed discount of 10%) discount on qualifying Silvercar rentals.

Final Thoughts

If I had to grade the Sapphire Reserve for the benefits it provides when renting cars, I’d say that it’s “Meeting Expectations”  You’ll get upgraded status and some additional discounts but that’s to be expected from a premium travel card.

For National and Avis, the ability to link your existing accounts online is a nice plus. The more work it takes, the less likely you will be to actually follow through with it.

If you have a Sapphire Reserve and currently don’t have status with these car rental companies, it can’t hurt to sign up. I find that once you’ve upgraded, the companies are relatively slow to update account statuses. The only company who’s ever downgraded me was National but a quick phone call fixed that problem and boosted me back up to Executive status.

  1. You should at least mention that the CSR includes primary rental car insurance coverage. That is arguably its most valuable benefit relating to car rentals.

    1. It wasn’t the theme of the article so I didn’t want to get tied down with explaining primary insurance (because that topic deserves its own article).
