May The Fourth Be With You: Our Visit To The Star Wars Themed Scum and Villainy Cantina

First of all, no May the Fourth post this year would be complete without remembering Peter Mayhew, the actor who brought Chewbacca to life. May you rest in peace, Peter. Thank you for your work and for sharing your life with millions of sci-fi geeks all over the world.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
We must be cautious. – Obi Wan (Ben) Kenobi

Ever since I first saw the Facebook page from the Scum and Villainy Cantina in Los Angeles, I was convinced I wanted to go. To my surprise, Sharon was interested in going as well.

When we were planning our Southwest Road Trip and knew we would be visiting Disneyland, we thought a trip to L.A. would be possible. Then we got tickets for Hamilton in L.A. (Note from Sharon: 5th time!) and decided to stay in town for the last weekend of our trip. It was fate. Or the Force. Or maybe you’re like Han Solo and don’t believe in hokey things like that.

Dear W Hotels – Stop With The Impossible To Understand Room Categories

Trying to figure our what type of room you’re booking is difficult enough without hotels giving fancy names to the categories. No hotel is worse when it comes to that than the W Hotel chain. I discovered these strangely named room categories when booking a stay at the W Hollywood. Remember, they’re the hotel that told us we needed to bring our party game with us.

Since I was booking with points, I could only book the base level room if there was one available. Here were the room categories I had to choose from:

The Case Of The Mysterious MiniBar Charge – Make Sure It Doesn’t Happen To You

I admit, this sounds like the title of some Hardy Boys Mystery. However, it’s a story that I’m sure plays out endless times in hotels around the world. If you’ve stayed in a moderate to high end hotel, I have no doubt you’ve come across an in-room minibar that looks much like this:

May The Fourth Be With You: The Star Wars Themed Scum and Villainy Cantina

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
We must be cautious. – Obi Wan (Ben) Kenobi

Ever since I first saw the Facebook page from the Scum and Villainy Cantina pop-up bar in Los Angeles, I was convinced I wanted to go. To my surprise, Sharon was interested in going as well.

At first, the location was only selling tickets for two months and you needed to purchase admission in advance and then reserve the date you wanted to go. Living on the other side of the continent, I just couldn’t make a trip there on a whim. So I kept following their website¬†and their Twitter and Instagram feeds, hoping for more information. First they extended for a month, and then another. I knew this pattern…they were following the Sleep No More¬†playbook, where the event says they’ll be open for a limited time so you’re made to feel the need to attend now before they close, and then they extend and extend. I kept hoping it would continue.

RANT: My New Pet Peeve With Hotels

It’s Friday. My “write whatever I want to” day. I’m well aware that just three weeks ago I wrote about how I didn’t want these posts to turn into me ranting about this or that. I’m giving myself a pass on that rule this week, as I now have a new thing that really annoys me. It’s a problem with hotels and I know I’ve given them a hard time in the past. First it was my list of five things I wish they did right and then my confusion about why they either give you too many or too few pillows. But it’s been several months and I’ve moved on to a new annoyance.

This one is more than just an issue about the room; it’s something that takes time and effort to discover and fix.
