If You’re Planning Travel Over Thanksgiving, Remember These Often Overlooked Tasks

Up until last year, we never considered traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. For starters, it’s one of the busiest times of the year and we try to avoid going at those times whenever possible. We also like to spend the holidays at home with friends and family when possible. However, there comes a time when the things you want to do only happen over that period.

Like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

If we wanted to get to New York, we’d have to be traveling around Thanksgiving, there was no way around that fact.

I started looking around a year out and eventually found airfare with miles and a hotel room along the parade route with points.

I was so proud of myself that I forgot to plan some other essential parts of the trip which are usually afterthoughts any other time of the year.

Is It Safe To Park Your Car At Airport Lots/Garages?

You’ve decided it’s better to park at the airport, in their long or short term parking lot, for this trip. Or maybe you did the “speed vs. cost” math and think that off site parking is a better deal this time around.

Either way, is it safe?

Speed & Cost: A Comparison of On-Site vs. Off-Site Airport Parking

I’ll admit it – I’m a snob about airport parking. When Joe and I are going out of town somewhere, my #1 favorite place to park is in the airport terminal parking garage. I know, I know…snobbish. But hey, if I’m going out of town, I want to get to where I’m going ASAP and if I’m coming home, I want to get back to my car ASAP.

However, the cost of parking at the airport has gone up astronomically, so in recent years I’ve agreed to park in the “economy” lots if we’re going to be gone for more than 1 or 2 nights. Still on airport property, but you have to take a shuttle to get to and from. So our costs went from about $17 per day to about $10 per day. That was still doable for several years but our local airport is now in the midst of some vast growth, to the point where the parking garages were usually not an option because they’re almost always 100% full, and the “economy” lots had expanded into the outlying grass…and besides the shuttle buses running slower because they had to make more stops, there was poor makeshift signage, and dragging your rolling suitcase over wet grass and dirt is not fun at all. So Joe finally talked me into (duh, duh, DUH!) offsite parking.

Why Do Hotels Charge For Parking? And How Can You Get Around Having To Pay For It?

Your trip is all planned – your hotel deposit is paid for, and you know how much your taxes and hotel fees are going to be. You drive to your destination and then you’re reminded about something you forgot to take into consideration – overnight parking charges.

Crap.

Why DO hotels charge you for parking, anyway? And what can you to avoid having to pay it? Well…

WDW Hotels Aren’t The Only Places Where You Now Have To Pay For Parking

Walt Disney World threw a curveball into the Disney and theme park world when they announced they would soon no longer allow overnight free parking at any of its Florida-based resorts. True to their word, effective for reservations made March 21, 2018 and thereafter, they began charging hotel guests $13 per night for self-parking at Value Resorts, $19 per night at Moderate Resorts and $24 per night at Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts. However this turned out to not be the only place where what had previously been free parking no longer was.
