In recent years, you may have seen a “Please rate your travel experience” sign at airports you’ve visited, with a “smiley” system.
Those little smileys (or sad faces) you tap on are part of a feedback system developed by a marketing firm called (what else but) HappyOrNot.
HappyOrNot, a company run out of Finland (with other offices in West Palm Beach, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London and Paris), is the global leader in instant customer and employee satisfaction reporting with their innovative feedback smileys. Since 2009, the company has been researching peoples’ happiness on a variety of topics, from where they shop, to where they eat, and everything in between. They’ve worked with over 3000 organizations in 117 countries and its clients include Microsoft, McDonald’s, London Heathrow Airport, LinkedIn, the British National Health Service (NHS), and IKEA.
When it comes to travel, at last count, they have HappyOrNot smiley terminals in about 160 airports across 36 countries and the company published their inaugural Airport Report a while back, which was based on 158 million responses. Here are some of the results:

Vacations tend to have their awesomeness mixed in with some terribleness. Or if not outright terribleness, at least some annoyingness. Welp, the good people at Happy Or Not (they’re the ones who invented the Happy –> Sad icons for push button surveys that you see in airports, hospitals, etc) have taken their travel satisfaction data (we’re talking 86,000,000 passenger feedbacks) to let us know when are the happiest (and least happiest) times to travel.

It’s pretty rare to see people who really, REALLY love their job. Oh sure, you’ll sometimes see people who look like they’re OK with what they do, and act accordingly. But you just as often see the ones who look like they haven’t enjoyed their jobs in years. You know the ones I mean – the burnt out ones with the sour pusses and the “customers stink” personalities. The ones who tell you that your carry-on is too big when it isn’t, or whose very lives seem to depend on the two words that are ruining the travel service industry.
One of the exceptions? This guy. And amazingly enough, he works for a place where the sourpusses tend to overpopulate the good employees by a bajillion to one – the airline industry. And if what he does during his job doesn’t put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will.
