The People Have Spoken & For Once, The Disney Parks Have Listened (Yay Free Stuff!)

The Walt Disney Company is at a place in its existence where it rarely answers to anyone or anything; the company calls the shots, usually with no meaningful explanation and definitely without apology. We’ve seen it happen time and time again with the closing of the Virtual Magic Kingdom online game, Pleasure Island at Walt Disney World and the Country Bear Jamboree at Disneyland.

The only time they seem to backtrack on decisions is when a small division of the company is suddenly losing money because of the change, or when it garners so much ill will that it makes Disney look bad.

Such appears to be the case of FuelRods.

Something Free At Walt Disney World & Disneyland? Of Course It Couldn’t Last…

People always say you never get anything of substance for free at Disney parks. And you really don’t. I mean, even their free dining program isn’t truly “free” – you’re paying it via some other avenue. So when Disney started selling Fuel Rods, the “first reusable, portable charging system allowing you to charge mobile devices on the go & recharge or swap for a fresh one instantly,” and offered free swapping, I was skeptical.

At first I thought the idea was dumb, simply because of, among other things, the price point of the Fuel Rods themselves (they were 50% more expensive than anywhere else they were available), the lack of swapping ability outside of Disney, and what a crappy charge the Fuel Rods gave your phone. Wow, did I get a lot of flack for that from hardcore Disney fans, LOL!

About 6 months later, I re-examined the whole Fuel Rod thing and one new thing stood out – there were admittedly many more kiosks around, particularly at theme parks, which meant there were more places to switch out. I still thought there were much better portable rechargers out there, but agreed they were OK during specific circumstances.

Then things started getting ugly…

FuelRods: Our Updated Opinion Of The Reusable, Portable Charging System For Mobile Devices

FuelRod is a reusable, portable charging system that allows you to fuel (charge) your mobile device on the go, and then recharge or swap for a fresh one at any FuelRod kiosk. After a relatively slow expansion, they came into the reality of millions of people when they were introduced at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in 2016.

When we first wrote about FuelRods a while back, we made it no secret that we had a very “ho hum” attitude about them. Besides a FuelRod’s inability to fully charge a modern smart phone, there were very few places to swap batteries outside the Disney parks, which made its convenience pretty limited.

Well, one of those things has changed, which is why our opinion of FuelRods has altered a little.
