Trip Report: 2019 Disney Vacation Club Exclusive Moonlight Magic Event at Epcot

Walt Disney World began their “Moonlight Magic” events in 2016 to celebrate Disney Vacation Club’s (DVC) 25th anniversary. DVC, as Disney’s version of a timeshare, can cost significantly less when you purchase points on the secondary market (as opposed to buying them directly from Disney). To make buying from Disney more valuable, they have continued the Moonlight Magic events from 2017 onward as a perk that’s reserved for those who’ve purchased points directly from them and not from the secondary market.

Joe and I have been attending Moonlight Magic events, on and off, ever since they began in 2016. As DVC members since 1991, and as Central FL locals, being able to go to a select park after hours, with minimal crowds, has been a nice perk that we look forward to here and there. As the events became more popular, it had become a little more difficult to sign up in 2018 if you weren’t staying at a WDW DVC property for the event (they get first dibs), but Disney has tweaked the system and we’ve found it easier to get in in 2019 than 2018.

We’d been to the Epcot event in 2017, and in 2019 had been to the event at Magic Kingdom, so we were interested to see how the event had changed, not only from park to park, but from year to year.

Disney’s 2019 DVC Moonlight Magic Event at WDW’s Magic Kingdom (Compared to 2017 & 2018)

One of multiple “arms” of the Walt Disney Company is that of Disney Vacation Club (DVC). It’s essentially a time share wherein people buy points that they can use to stay at Disney properties at what would be a lesser rate than if one paid cash.

DVC membership can potentially cost much, much less when one purchases points on the secondary market (as opposed to buying them directly from Disney). So to make buying DVC points from Disney have a higher perceived value, one thing they’ve been doing are these member-only, after-dark events called “Moonlight Magic” at the various Disney theme parks. Running since 2016, they’re a perk that’s only open to those who’ve purchased points directly from Disney and not from the secondary market.

Joe’s been a DVC member since its inception in the early 1990s (the running joke was that I married him for his DVC points and now for his hotel points LOL) and because we live so close to WDW, we’ve been able to attend several Moonlight Magic events, including the ones at Magic Kingdom (MK) in 2017, 2018 and now 2019. So it’s been interesting to see how the events there have evolved.

DVC Moonlight Magic Event at Disney’s Animal Kingdom (March, 2018)

Joe and I have gone to many Moonlight Magic events for DVC members, several of which we reported here at Your Mileage May Vary:

This visit was a lot of firsts for us, though – it was my friend Scott’s first Moonlight Magic event (Joe wasn’t able to go this evening due to work commitments), it was my first Moonlight Magic event at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, AND it was my first time exploring “Pandoraland” and Avatar Flight of Passage. Here are the highlights of the evening:

2018 DVC Exclusive Moonlight Magic Event at Magic Kingdom (Compared to 2017)

After attending several Moonlight Magic events in 2017 (Magic Kingdom in February, Typhoon Lagoon in July and Epcot in December), we were happy to hear they were going to continue the events into 2018.

Briefly, the Moonlight Magic events are special, after-hours events at Disney parks (they do them at Disneyland, too!) specifically for select members of Disney Vacation Club (DVC) and their guests. DVC, as Disney’s version of a timeshare, can cost significantly less when you purchase points on the secondary market (as opposed to buying them directly from Disney). To make buying DVC points from Disney more valuable, these Moonlight Madness events have been running since 2016 as a perk that’s reserved for those who’ve purchased points directly from them and not from the secondary market.

We were especially looking forward to this event at the Magic Kingdom (MK), since we had been to the 2017 Moonlight Magic event at that park and wanted to see how they had changed from one year to the next. I’m happy to report that Disney did not disappoint!
