Just like clockwork, every autumn, migrations to Florida and Arizona happen. Except it’s not snowbirds, or even real birds, that are migrating.
It’s rental cars.
While it’s cold in much of the rest of the country, it stays toasty warm in Florida and Arizona, so, of course, a lot of people flock to those states during the winter months. Lots of those tourists will want to rent cars, so instead of bringing them here by the truckload, the car rental companies make it financially lucrative for customers to drive their cars from up north to select cities in the Sunshine State and the Grand Canyon State.
And the time of the year that they do this is now.

The Sapphire Reserve is Chase’s premium travel credit card. It provides an unmatched combination of points earning and travel insurance coverage. When it comes to travel perks included with the card, it’s right in the pack with other cards offering a Priority Pass membership and Global Entry reimbursement. Many of the other travel benefits supplied by the card come from it being a VISA Infinite card, some of them being premier level membership with several rental car companies.

I remember back when I first was a National Car Rental Emerald Club member. That status gave me the privilege of booking a midsize car and being able to book any car parked in the Emerald Aisle. No more having to take the car they assigned me, I had the power to pick whichever car I wanted.
I remember renting an Oldsmobile Bravada just because I could.
OK, stop being jealous. Who wouldn’t want to rent this car?
Flash forward and National isn’t the only car rental company that lets you pick from the lot. They don’t even require you to have any type of status to be able to pick your own car anymore.

When you rent a car, I bet you don’t give much thought into the times you say you’ll pick up and drop off the vehicle. Most people enter in the time their flight is due to arrive and then maybe give themselves an hour, or two, before your flight is due to leave. But what if your flight home is delayed and you know you’re going to be stuck at the airport? You might decide to just show up a bit later. What if you change your arriving flight at the last minute to get on an earlier plane? Those decisions could cost you an entire day worth of rental car charges, if you’re not careful.

While the American Express Platinum cards are the standard for providing travel benefits, you’re eligible for several of the same perks if you have a premier card from a different bank. Since I canceled my Platinum card, I’ve been looking to keep as many of the benefits I had previously with the cards I still have.
