If you’re old enough to remember the early 21st century (PLEASE tell me you are…), you’ll recall the U.S.-based airlines were in a heap of trouble right after 9/11, and again (or still) during the Great Recession of about 10 years ago, to the point where they eventually got some huge bail out money from the government in the hopes they could pull through. Well, apparently they did, as evidenced by the results of a new study that just came out which includes just how much money the major airlines pocketed in 2016.

Although birds and planes have shared the skies for over 100 years, they’ve never lived in harmony. The planes go in the air, the birds hit the planes (or the planes hit the birds), the birds always die and occasionally it causes an aviation disaster. The most famous of these encounters was dubbed “The Miracle on the Hudson,” when, in 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 struck a flock of Canada geese 3 minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia International Airport (LGA) and, as a result lost all engine power. The pilots glided the plane into the Hudson River, and all 155 people aboard were rescued.
Since then, the USDA has slaughtered tens of thousands of birds on or near runways across the country. But one airport has opted for a more humane solution.

You watch the news and see stories about natural disasters all the time. Hurricanes, Floods, Tornadoes. Earthquakes. Tsunamis. Wildfires. We can’t avoid them.
One thing you need to know is the people who live in these areas often make their living by providing for the numerous tourists who flock to visit. After cleaning up and getting basic services on line, the next priority is to get the guest areas ready as quickly as possible, often even before cleaning up their own personal properties.
That’s why you need to support these places instead of putting off trips because the area might still be “recovering.”

I previously wrote about the winter promotions for IHG and Hilton. But with all of the Hurricane Irma excitement, I missed out on the promos that Starwood and Marriott announced this past week. Now that things are getting back to normal, I’m checking to see if any of these are valuable. As always, if you think you might be eligible for any promotion, it pays to register even if you don’t take advantage of it. Otherwise you might forget or miss out on the registration date.
Here are the details for each promotion:
