My Hyatt Plan Had Some Unintended Consequences

by joeheg

We’ve been trying to stay at more Hyatt properties when possible. Because of that, I earned my first Hyatt Brand Explorer reward for a free night at a category 1-4 hotel. Because some of our upcoming trips will be to Hyatt brands we’ve already visited, I decided to book those stays under Sharon’s World of Hyatt account. This way, we could earn an additional free night when she reaches 5 brands.

When we’ve been staying under my account, we get the benefits of Explorist status, which I have because of the World of Hyatt credit card.

We get none of those benefits when we stay under Sharon’s account since she has “Member” status. I never gave any thought to what I get as a Discoverist.

  • Premium Internet
  • Preferred Room Upgrade
  • Elite Check In
  • 2 PM Late Checkout
  • 10% Bonus Points on Eligible Charges

And one more benefit which bit me in the behind on this trip. Free bottled water.

We arrived at our Manhattan hotel and checked in around 1 AM. We unexpectedly received an upgrade to a room with a great view, which shows there’s more to getting an upgrade than having status.

I grabbed one of the water bottles on the nightstand and found this note.

two bottles of water in a white box

It said that bottled water is complimentary for elite members. For members or those not enrolled in World of Hyatt, the water costs $6 a bottle.

It wasn’t a huge deal as we’ll gladly drink NY City tap water. The only downside was the room only had highball glasses, which didn’t hold very much.

I’d never thought about how nice it is to show up in a room and have bottles of water waiting. I didn’t like that I’d have to pay $6 for each bottle.

It’s an acceptable trade-off because the free night we’ll get is worth over $200, so I’m not worried about a bottle of water. It’s more that I never thought about how that small perk makes a difference in the quality of your stay.

That kind of crap annoys me with hotels, if I were you I would have let the hotel have it over the stupidity of a bottle of water on a several hundred dollar room. I wish more people were strong enough to speak up instead of being treated like that…
