In February I wrote about how I booked my first hotel through Rocketmiles for as long as I could remember. In fact, I had to reset my password because I hadn’t used it in so long.
I had booked a one-night stay at the Drury Inn & Suites in Gainesville, Florida and earned an extra 2,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points for paying the same amount as available on the hotel website.
When I booked the room with Rocketmiles, their website required a credit card. I used Sharon’s Capital One Venture X and planned to erase the travel expense when it was posted to the account. Rocketmiles said that my card would be charged on the day of the hotel stay.
I showed up at the hotel and the front desk agent asked for my credit card. She also had to update my address and phone number.
This was when I realized Rocketmiles hadn’t paid for my hotel and I was on the hook for the bill. Since I wasn’t traveling with Sharon, I couldn’t use her Venture X card (and I didn’t have it with me anyway). I ended up charging the room to my Delta SkyMiles Gold Business card because at least I’d be paying off the miles I borrowed from AMEX.
I was concerned about the bonus miles from Rocketmiles. Since they didn’t process the payment for the room, would I still receive the bonus miles?
It took a few weeks, but I received emails from Rocketmiles and Southwest Rapid Rewards alerting me that the 2,000 bonus miles are now in my account. 
I logged into my Southwest account and confirmed I received the 2,000 points.
While I didn’t get to erase the charge with my Capital One points and ended up paying with a card that earned 1 SkyMile per dollar, at least I received the 2,000 bonus Southwest points.
Lesson learned. Always bring a card to pay for your hotel when you’ve booked a stay with Rocketmiles. Even if they take your card info when booking the room and say they’re going to charge that card on the day of your stay.
