Reminder! Check Your Flights After Being Notified About Changes

When I’m planning a trip, I like getting the travel plans set in advance. Of course, that means I’ll never be able to book a flight where inventory only opens up within 1 week of departure. It also means I’ll sometimes have to pay more for an award ticket than if I’d waited for prices to drop. I’ve made peace with myself about those facts and it doesn’t keep me from enjoying our travels.

A downside of booking travel in advance is that airlines are prone to changing schedules. Sometimes it’s only a few minutes (and here’s why they do that.) But sometimes the changes are more substantial, up to them totally removing a flight from the schedule.

I guess it’s a result of the pandemic and not going on complicated trips except flying to Iceland in 2021. But I forgot to check on our flights on Singapore Airlines after booking them with KrisFlyer points many months ago. That’s even after I received an alert in July that our flight times changed by a few minutes, and another notice in September about a 90-minute time change. When you’re talking about a 15-hour flight, I wasn’t concerned about a change in arrival time as I hadn’t yet booked our positioning flight to get home.

Today, I had some time to look into booking that positioning flight so I needed our exact flight times. When I logged into the Singapore Airlines website, I received a warning that I hadn’t reviewed our flight changes and should call the airline.

I didn’t feel like calling Singapore so I tried to approve the time change on the website, which worked. However, it turned out we had lost our seating assignments. There are still plenty of seats available in business class so I’ll be able to pick something suitable but this might not have been the case if I had waited longer to check our reservations.

The one positive is that an A350-900ULR is now servicing our flight with only Business and Premium Economy seats. The forward business cabin is almost fully booked, but I had my pick of seats in the rear cabin. The only decision was whether we wanted to take two window seats or have the two seats in the middle.

I’ll check on the rest of our flights since our trip is quickly approaching. Even though we’re traveling with a tour that’s coordinating all of our hotels, activities and travel, I still have to make sure we have a way to get there and get home.
