I Earned Extra Spirit Points For Looking Through My Seat Pocket

by joeheg

I’m not thrilled with Spirit Airlines’ pricing model. While their prices are lower than other airlines, the fees can add up fast. There are also rules about bag size, luggage weight and check-in procedures that can trip up even the most seasoned travelers. That’s why I was surprised that Spirit was giving away points in their Free Spirit loyalty program for passengers who read a leaflet in their seat pocket.

To be honest, I enjoyed most of my first experience flying with Spirit and they’ve fixed one of the shortcomings of their fleet that has kept business travelers from flying with them more often. Spirit now offers Wi-Fi on many of its planes.

I wanted to compare it to American Airlines, Delta and Southwest Wi-Fi, so I paid $6.99 for my LGA-MCO flight.

I had to look at the card in the seat pocket to find the directions of how to log into the Wi-Fi network.

Once I logged in and had internet access, I scanned a QR code from the card in the seat pocket offering 500 Free Spirit miles. I figured it was only for new members but it looked like the offer was for everyone.

Now that I’m home, I can type the website from the flight and it still pulls up the offer for 500 points.

I wasn’t sure this would work, but the points hit my account a few days after my flight.

In January 2021 Sprit Airlines relaunched its loyalty program called Free Spirit. Apparently, they are still trying to get passengers to sign up. Understandably, infrequent travelers might ignore the program because previously points would expire with three months of inactivity. But I see they’re now increased to a more reasonable 12-month limit.

I was pleased to see Spirit offered the points to current and new members. I’ll admit that 500 points aren’t much but getting anything for free from Spirit is a big deal to me.
