Icelandair Flight Operated by Father, Mother, & Their 3 Daughters

Every once in a while you’ll read about two family members working on the same flight. Captain Holly Petitt and First Officer Keely Petitt became Southwest Airlines’ first pair of mother-daughter pilots when they flew together in July. Captain Kamelia Zarka and First Officer Maria Zarka joined their ranks in early September, as Hawaiian Airlines’ first mother-daughter flight team. British Airways pulled off a surprise for multiple families on Father’s Day 2019, when several fathers who were employed by the airline got to work with their sons or daughters who also worked for them.

A family who worked for Icelandair just said “Hold my beer.”

“A family that flies together stays together!” With this sentence, the airline introduced Ingvar Mar Jónsson and his family. The pilot, his wife and his three daughters all just worked an unusual flight in which nearly the entire family was part of the crew of the Icelandic national airline.

Captain Ingvar was at the controls of the plane. Meanwhile, his wife Sigríður and their three daughters were all flight attendants and were in charge of welcoming the passengers of flight FI645 that took off from Washington DC bound for Keflavik International Airport.

It wasn’t a coincidence this happened – when the family found it was a possibility for them to all work the same flight, they asked their employer if the plans could be arranged.

Icelandair agreed and, of course, the airline let the world know about the event:

The captain shared the occasion on his Facebook page as well, also mentioning why it was only 5/6 of the family: “Almost the whole family together in Washington. Nonni Ingvarsson was at home taking care of the dogs.” The youngest member of the family, a teenage son, hasn’t yet decided whether or not he’ll follow the family career path.

Sigríður comes from a family involved in aviation. Her father and grandfather were both flight controllers in the company. Sigríðar’s great-uncle worked as an air traffic controller for Icelandair for decades. Her brother works as an air traffic controller and his wife is a flight attendant. On top of that, Sigríðar’s sister is also a flight attendant.

The couple met while working for the airline. Ingvar joined Icelandair in 1996 and Sigríður a year later. Daughters Nína, Ingibjörg and Sigríður each decided to follow in their mother’s footsteps when they grew up.
