Why I’m Tempted By The Most Recent Hyatt Points Sale (1.68 CPP)

by joeheg

I took a pass when the last Hyatt point sale ended in May. While I’d almost always be able to get a better value than I’d pay for the points, there were several reasons I skipped the promotion.

One reason was that Hyatt regularly runs point sales and the almost three-month gap between promotions is unusually long for them. The current deal is the same as the last, except the minimum points needed for the bonus dropped from 5,000 to 3,000 points.

The maximum number of Hyatt points you can purchase in a year is 55,000, which with the 30% discount would cost $924, or 1.68 cents per point. The offer runs through September 30th. To be eligible for the bonus points offer, your World of Hyatt account has to be at least 60 days old.

So why am I considering purchasing points when I decided not to purchase them just a few months ago?

I used many of my Ultimate Rewards points

One of the reasons I didn’t need to buy Hyatt points was because I had Ultimate Rewards points which I could transfer to Hyatt when I needed them. I’ve burnt a good amount of Chase points over the last few months and my balance isn’t as large as before.

We didn’t win the Hyatt Daily Getaways lottery

While we tried to snag one of the few Daily Getaways Hyatt packages, we weren’t so lucky. In May, I didn’t want to purchase points with the chance I could get them for less. Now that opportunity is gone, I know how many points I can buy.

It’s getting close to the end of the year

With the end of the year approaching, I have to consider the 55,000 points yearly maximum. While there have been Hyatt promotions to buy points in December, there’s no guarantee there will be another chance in 2022. Even so, we don’t know if the discount will be the same.

If I purchase points now, I’ll also be able to buy more in 2023 if I need them for a big redemption, like 99K points I spent for three nights at the Grand Hyatt Kauai.

Final Thoughts

While making the decision not to buy points was easy in May, I’m not as sure about this promotion. There are plenty of reasons to purchase points now. The main one to not buy them is that I don’t have any specific Hyatt stay in mind for 2023 when we’d use the points. I have a month to think this one over and I’ll probably wait until the last minute to decide.

Generally one should only buy points/miles if they have an immediate plans/uses for those points/miles.

I purchased IHG points recently. We are planning a trip to Japan for March/April. Using points allows me to cancel the award stays at no cost, whatsoever. So if Japan does not open to independent travel, we cancel everything.
