I’m Falling Behind The 15K World Of Hyatt Spending Requirement For An Extra Free Night

by joeheg

In May I decided that I’d try to spend $15,000 on the World of Hyatt Visa card to earn an additional category 1-4 free night certificate. Once I finished the spending requirements for the three cards I had just signed up for, I could move all of our non-category spendings to the Hyatt card.

Of course, things never go exactly to plan and in the meanwhile, I’ve received sign-up offers for the Bilt Mastercard and a spending offer for adding an additional card to my AMEX Platinum. Shifting our spending to these cards prevented me from making a dent in the World of Hyatt card’s 15K requirement. I’m just over 1/2 way there and only have 4 months to spend the additional $7,500.

I guess I could always give up now but part of the willingness to try for this reward was the challenge of getting it. For some people, $15K spending isn’t a big deal but for us, it’s a decent amount to put on a single card.

Since I’ve fallen behind my goal, I will have to have some discipline for the rest of 2022 and move almost all of our charges to the Hyatt card. That is, except for the few charges I put on other cards for specific purposes.

I’m not going to move my cell phone bill to a different card because I like getting insurance coverage for our phones just for paying the bill. I’ll also put airline or rental car expenses on other cards because of the increased travel protections those cards provide. I’ll also leave any charge where I earn credits on those cards because it would be foolish to give up free money.

However, I will move some charges that earn more points with another card, like our toll road transponder charges, to the Hyatt card, even if it means losing 1 or 2 points per dollar on those expenses. I’ll also pay for our groceries and gas with the card, even if it’s not the best earning card in those categories.

Finally, I’ll set our Amazon accounts to use the Hyatt card.

After 2 months, I’ll have a better idea if these changes are making a difference. If so, I’ll keep doing that until the end of the year. If it still looks like I’m coming up short, I’ll look for other ways to spend some extra money on the card. Thankfully, the end of the year is a great time to purchase gift cards.

Good on ya! You’ll finish earning four more elite nights towards Globalist with that spend also – which was the motivator for me to knock this off early in the year to focus spend on the business card earning slightly better elite nights. I just hit 51 Hyatt nights mostly on spend – I’m one of the credit card status earning junkies the “true loyalists” love to hate.

I prepay my car and homeowners/rental insurance to get my balance to required level. I’ve been working on renewing Globalist status, so everything gets charged to my Hyatt card.

If it gets to that, I’m thinking about that and estimated tax payments.
