Flying From Honolulu Just Got A Little Faster

by SharonKurheg

There’s a lot to love about visiting Hawaii. The tropical locale. The beaches. The “no worries,” relaxed way of life that we rarely get to experience here on the mainland. Everything there is a little bit slower, but in a good way.

The one place you don’t want to have that slower, relaxed atmosphere is at the airport. Fortunately, at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, they sped up the process a little bit.

Since 2021, the TSA has begun installing Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) at airports. The system is designed to confirm the validity of a traveler’s identification and then confirm their flight information in near real-time, based on the information on their I.D.

“…you hand your I.D. to the travel document checker when you approach the checkpoint and they scan your I.D., and this machine verifies that you are flying out that day,” said Jessica Mayle, TSA regional spokesperson.

This, in turn, means the TSA officer doesn’t have to compare your I.D. with your boarding pass, which saves several seconds per person in line at the TSA security checkpoint.

From a safety point of view, CAT improves the travel document checker’s ability to accurately authenticate passenger identification and pre-screening status, addressing the vulnerabilities associated with ID and boarding pass fraud, according to the TSA.

Anyway, Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) was recently introduced at HNL, which means you can count on shaving a little time off your wait.

For passengers age 18+, any form of valid I.D. that you’d typically use at the TSA checkpoint will work at airports using CAT. They include:

  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) ID. This includes active duty and retired military IDs, their dependents, and DOD civilians. Also, the DOD Common Access Card (CAC).
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner ID
  • Trusted Traveler card:
    • Global Entry
    • Secure Electronic Network for Traveler Rapid Inspection (SENTRI)
    • Free and Secure Trade (FAST) ID
    • NEXUS card
  • Permanent Resident Card/Resident Alien Card (I-551)
  • Border Crossing Card/nonimmigrant visa (DSP-150)
  • DHS refugee travel document (I-571)
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Employment Authorization Document (I-766)
  • Driver’s or enhanced driver’s license
  • Identification card issued by or under authority of a state Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent state office that is intended or commonly accepted for the purpose of identifying individuals
  • Passports
  • United Nations laissez-passer
  • Canadian driver’s license
  • Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) card
