4-Year-Old Loudly Calls Out Woman’s Inappropriate Behavior On Plane

by SharonKurheg

There’s a certain time in a little kid’s life when they just tell it like it is. You know what I mean. They’re old enough to talk and to understand a lot of what’s going on, but haven’t really learned the nuances of proper etiquette. If you ever took a psychology class, you may remember that what Freud called the “superego” kicks in around age 3-5. That’s when they start understanding the values, morals, codes and prohibitions of society. But until then? There’s just no filter.

Case in point, when I was about 3 or 4, I was with my mom somewhere, maybe the supermarket. The woman next to us was wearing a dress that, in 20/20 hindsight, smelled kind of mildewy (full disclosure – to this day the smell of mildew makes me want to hurl). I distinctly remember blurting out to my mom (in my “outside” voice, no less), “Mommy, that lady’s dress smells! She needs to use Woolite!” (I don’t think we ever used Woolite in our house, but yay for the power of TV commercials on a young child’s mind, right?)

I admittedly don’t remember what happened next. I’m sure my mother was totally embarrassed by my exclamation. She probably apologized profusely to the woman with the smelly dress and admonished me that, “nice little girls don’t say things like that.” But hey, I guess that ol’ superego hadn’t kicked in yet, y’know?

So yeah…little kids. They tell it like it is. And sometimes it can be as embarrassing as hell (like my social faux pas all those years ago). But other times? It’s just damn FUNNY!

A couple of years ago, Rodney Small, age 4, was on a plane home to Houston from Orlando, Florida. His dad, Darryl, videotaped this little interaction Rodney had with the woman behind him. The kid called it as he saw it, and even called the woman out for her behavior.

Take a look…

You know what though? It worked. The woman took her “stinky feet” off his armrest. 😉

Enjoy your day, travel friends!
