The Easiest Way I’ve Ever Earned 1,000 American AAdvantage Miles

by joeheg

There are plenty of ways you can earn airline miles. The most obvious, and least lucrative, is to fly a domestic route in economy class. One of the easiest ways to rack up miles quickly is to sign up for a co-brand credit card and get a signup bonus.

Between those methods, there are plenty of other ways to earn miles:

However, I was just offered 1,000 American AAdvantage miles for doing 1 simple task.

About a year ago, we applied for the CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard. After meeting the spending requirement to earn the signup bonus, the card has received very little use. While spending on American co-brand cards is now a way to achieve status, I’m not looking to get AA status.

Because we’re not using the card, Citi offered 1,000 miles to use the card; for anything. No spending requirement or a number of transactions involved. All I had to do was pull out the card from the drawer and use it once.

I used the card to pay for the admission to the Austin Admirals Club, earning 2 American miles per dollar.

The bonus miles were posted to my account simultaneously with the transaction. If you were curious, the bonus miles did not count as Loyalty Points to earn status.

Will this lead to us using the American co-brand card more frequently? Probably not. When it comes down to it, the card doesn’t offer any categories where it’s more valuable than other cards we have. We have the card mainly because of the free checked bag and the preferred boarding. However, I’m not going to turn down an easy 1,000 miles for pulling the card out of the drawer.
