Help Plan Our Trip: What’s There To Do In Dallas?

by joeheg

While we visit Texas almost every year, it’s usually to visit Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. We’ve hit many of the sights in Austin and San Antonio and even visited the Texas Hill Country.

On this trip, we’re starting in Dallas to visit some friends and family before heading southwest. We have most of the day to spend but we can’t seem to find anything to do.

So, help us out. What’s there to do in Dallas (or nearby) for a day? We’ll have a car, but not with unlimited mileage, so not something too far away. If you’ve been reading here for a while, you know we love something local, a little quirky or even a bit tacky. The history stuff is OK but I don’t think we’re looking for a museum-type place unless it’s an unusual subject matter.

And if you have any don’t miss places on the drive between Dallas and Austin, we’d like to hear about those too.

You’ve helped us out when we were looking for tips in Chicago, New Orleans, Las Vegas and Seattle but no pressure on this one, OK?

You said you’d consider museums with unusual subject matter. This is pretty unusual. I am planning to visit this summer, but haven’t been yet. https://www.auvm.net/

I think for Dallas, there’s six flags if that’s your thing, there’s the Fort Worth Zoo, and in my opinion the best thing is the stockyards in Fort Worth. I’ve heard excellent things about those, and it looks stunning. And then there’s also the Magnolia Market at the Silo’s in Waco, which is free and owned by Chip and Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper, and best of all, the Dr. Pepper museum, which looks awesome! In Seguin, which is 30 minutes from New Braunfels, there’s a cool theme park called ZDT’s, which was a lot of fun and had a great water slide. I also liked Canyon Lake outside of San Antonio, and the holiday inn on the lake was nice!

“Dallas” covers a whole lot of ground. Here’s some interesting free things to do and hit up a Cindy’s Deli for lunch. https://www.tourtexas.com/destinations/50-free-things-to-do-in-dallas

The Sixth Floor Museum and Dealey plaza in Dallas are a must see even for the casual history person. Waco is a fun stop between Austin and Dallas. The Magnolia stuff is fun but there are good restaurants there and also the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco.
