United Increases Checked Bag Fees For Select Flights

by SharonKurheg

Between the combination of high gas prices and having to reroute some international flights to avoid the airspace of Russia and Ukraine, fees for travel have been working their way up. Airline prices are increasing. Uber is charging a fuel surcharge.

And now? United’s drawing a line in the sand and has hiked the fee for checked-in bags for some of their flights.

The Times of India reports that due to the longer routes required to circumvent certain airspace, United has increased some of the baggage charges for its flights to/from India. There are a few exceptions, but passengers will expect to pay $200 for their second checked bag (previously $100) and $300 for their third (or more) checked bags, or for oversized checked bags (previously $200).

Passengers’ first checked bag is still free.

“Due to closed airspace in eastern Europe and Russia, United is now operating a longer route for direct flights between the U.S. and Delhi,” United wrote to its trade partners. “As a result, we are instituting a temporary bag fee increase that will apply to all new tickets issued on or after April 5, 2022, due to weight restrictions.”
Passengers who are premiere, premium cabin and Star Alliance Gold customers will still be able to have their existing free checked bag allowance.  But any of their bags that are above their allowance will also be subject to the new, increased fees.
The Times of India noted that Air India continued to fly over Russian airspace. It has 34 nonstop flights between the U.S. and India every week (including daily flights from JFK, Chicago and Newark, 10 per week from San Francisco and 3 from Washington). They have no increased fees.
