Hyatt Reminded Me I’m Missing Out On Earning Extra Points

by joeheg

We’re new members of the Hyatt fan club. After a rocky start with some mediocre properties, our last three stays with them have been great. Therefore I’m paying more attention to the World of Hyatt program and learning how to earn more points.

I’ve held the World of Hyatt card for a few years but after meeting the spending requirement and earning an extra free night, the card stayed in the drawer. I’m using it more because I will try to get the extra free night by spending $15,000 in 2022. Since this bonus is based on a calendar year, it’s best to decide if you’re going for it early in the year.

As I mentioned in a previous article, my cardmember anniversary passed and I paid the $95 annual fee. Hyatt sent me a message reminding me that the Discoverist status from having the card will be good through 2024.

One thing I didn’t realize is that I was missing out on earning extra Hyatt points from their partnership with American Airlines. I knew there was some deal but it’s for Hyatt Elite members. I don’t consider Discoverist to be elite, mainly because it’s the first level of status you can earn and they give it to all credit cardholders.

I did a little searching and it turns out that Discoverist is enough to let you earn bonus Hyatt points for eligible American Airlines flights. All you need to do is link your accounts on the Hyatt website. Once you log into your World of Hyatt account, click on the Earn section. I couldn’t find a way to link accounts with the app but you can use a mobile browser.

I clicked on the details and the process was as simple as typing in my AAdvantage account number.

No matter your level of Hyatt elite status, everyone earns 1 bonus point per $1 of eligible spending with American Airlines.

In less than a minute, my accounts were linked.

There’s also a program for American AAdvantage elite members, Gold level and higher, to earn points for spending at Hyatt properties. Registration for that program is on the AA website. If you’re elite in both programs, you only have to register on either Hyatt or American’s website to receive both benefits.

I’m glad that Hyatt reminded me of this benefit of being a Discoverist. Just another reason to like Hyatt and the World of Hyatt program.
