Wyndham Hotels Looking To Break Into A New Market

by joeheg

While many of us have been looking at the changes with Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton and IHG, there’s been another hotel chain that’s been making some big moves.

Wyndham is the largest operator of hotels in the Americas. While its properties might not be luxury, there’s no denying that Wyndham hotels are everywhere.

With the recent addition of the LaQuinta brand, you’re more than likely to find one of their hotels at most exits off the interstate (and here’s how you can find out what hotels, restaurants and gas stations are at each exit of the US Interstates.)

While hotels under the Wyndham umbrella cover most of the country, there is one area of the hotel market where they fall short. That’s the extended-stay hotel.

The other major hotel chains all have one (or more) entrants in this space. But Wyndham only has the Hawthorn Suites brand, which isn’t that well known. In fact, I bet most people wouldn’t know that is a Wyndham brand if you asked.

Since Wyndham is trying to become a serious player in the hotel market by improving its Wyndham Rewards program which is now a Citi ThankYou transfer partner and offering a decent co-brand card portfolio with the Wyndham Earner cards, they’re looking to leave no stone uncovered.

I’d guess that’s why they just announced a new extended-stay brand.

Currently named Project ECHO, Wyndham has signed contracts to build 50 new hotels under the unnamed brand with developers in the Southeastern US and the Gulf Coast.

The first hotel in the pipeline is expected to open in 2023 and Wyndham is expecting to make deals with other partners looking to enter the extended-stay marketplace which has remained resilient even during the pandemic.

I’ve been following Wyndham’s transformation from a purely economy brand to a hotel chain that includes properties that span the spectrum of offerings. We’ve stayed at LaQuinta and even Microtel hotels when necessary and found them acceptable for our needs. With the chain expanding into other areas, Wyndham and its rewards program is one to keep on your radar.

Besides Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Hyatt, and Wyndham, there is a 6th player, Choice Privileges – Sleep Inn, Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Econolodge, Rodeway Inn, Comfort Suites. That is my budget choice instead of Wyndham.
