Another Airline Lowering Max Checked Luggage Weight To 40 Pounds

by SharonKurheg

Remember when you used to fly, you could check your bag for free? Yeah, those days are long gone. Nearly all U.S.-based airlines charge a fee for checked bags up to 50 pounds, as well as an overage fee for bags between 50 and 100 pounds.

There had been only 3 outliers to that. Southwest Airlines accepts the first two checked bags for free, provided they don’t exceed 50 lbs and 62 linear inches. And both Spirit and Allegiant Airlines have a maximum of 40 pounds (not 50) before they charge you overage.

Unfortunately, you can add one more airline to the list of those that will only allow your luggage to be 40 pounds.

Frontier Airlines. You know, home of “Low Fares Done Right.”

The change will take effect on March 1 for tickets purchased on or after January 18, as per Frontier’s website.

  • For tickets purchased before January 18, 2022, maximum of 50 pounds.
  • For tickets purchased on or after January 18, 2022, and travel completed before March 1, 2022, maximum of 50 pounds.
  • For tickets purchased on or after January 18, 2022 and travel on or after March 1, 2022, maximum of 40 pounds.

For tickets purchased before January 18, 2022 and for tickets purchased on or after January 18, 2022, and travel completed before March 1, 2022, bags weighing over 50 pounds will be charged $75 per bag, per direction. Bags over 100 pounds will not be accepted.

For tickets purchased on or after January 18, 2022, and travel on or after March 1, 2022, maximum of 40 pounds. Bags weighing 41-50 pounds will be charged $50 per bag, per direction. Bags weighing 51-100 pounds will be charged $100 per bag, per direction. Bags over 100 pounds will not be accepted.

Denver-based Frontier says they’re decreasing their maximum weight for checked bags to help keep carbon emissions low.

Carry on bags on Frontier must still be a maximum of 10″D x 16″W x 24″H, with a maximum weight of 35 pounds. The cost to bring a carry-on bag varies from $37 to $60, depending on when you pay for having a carry-on bag.

Personal items can have a maximum size of 8”D x 18”W x 14”H and must fit under the seat in front of you. There’s currently no charge for having one personal item.

“to keep carbon emissions low” ??

What nonsense !! And Frontier expects us to believe this crap ??

They lowered the bag weight to charge some of us MORE money if we go over 40 lbs.

A long time ago, airlines used to limit the weight to 70 lbs. That made traveling to college by plane feasible because you could carry about 150 lbs (technically 210 lbs if your carry on bag was also 70 lbs.). If a parent also went along, that could be 300 lbs.
