Your trip is done and you’ve returned your rental car to whichever company you’ve rented it from. You get to the airport and as you’re checking in your baggage, you realize that you left your carry-on bag in the trunk. Or you were using your E-ZPass for tolls and forgot to grab it from the windshield. Or maybe you threw your sweater in the back seat and left it there.
What DO you do if you leave something behind in your rental car, anyway?
Well, if you’ve just recently left the car, say, less than an hour ago, they may not have processed it yet – try going back to the desk, if you have time (another good reason to give yourself plenty of time at the airport, huh?). If not, give them a call – maybe they can check and retrieve it – even if you don’t have time to go back and get it, maybe you can make arrangements for them to mail it to you.
But if you realize you’re missing something when you’re on the plane – or in the case of that E-Zpass, when you need to put it back into your own car – you may not be able to contact the rental car company until hours or maybe even days later.
So then what?
Fortunately, almost all of the major rental car company has a Lost & Found option set up that may be able to help you. Here’s how to reach them:
- Ace – I couldn’t find anything on Ace’s U.S. corporate site that mentions Lost and Found. This is the same rental car company that has minimal information on its website about paying tolls.
- Alamo
- Avis
- Budget
- Dollar
- Enterprise
- Fox (go down to “After Renting”)
- Hertz
- National
- Payless (look under “Company Info”)
- Rent-A-Wreck (look under #10 / Lost and Found)
- Sixt
- Thrifty
- U-Save – I couldn’t find anything on U-Save’s U.S. corporate site that mentions Lost and Found. This is the same rental car company that has minimal information on its website about paying tolls.

Good luck with that… I forgot my cellphone on the dash as I was using it for gps on a rental car from FOX in Las Vegas… realized not even 5 minutes from leaving the parking lot on the way to the airport, I called the FOX location from another cellphone I had as I carry two with me, personal and work phones, and they said agents outside already cleaned the car and there was nothing brought in..
Check the box next to NEVER RENT AGAIN FROM FOX ✅
