Uganda Airlines: The People Have Spoken! Grasshoppers For Everyone!

A few days ago, several news outlets focused on Uganda Airlines. Two passengers were apparently selling fried grasshoppers, commonly known as “Nsenene,” a delicacy in the area, on an Uganda Airlines flight late last week.

The duo, Murbiru Paul and Kiggundo Habib, both phone accessory dealers, were on flight UR446, which was going from Entebbe International Airport to Dubai. According to police, one hawked Nsenene to other passengers while the other videotaped the seller. This caused a commotion on the plane, which was later said to pose a safety threat to other travelers.

The two were apprehended and charged with “Common Nuisance” charges. They’ve since apologized for the actions.

The flight staff of flight UR446, meanwhile, were suspended for allowing the men to sell their grasshoppers on the plane.

But then the story had a new twist!

The day after the event occurred, Uganda Airlines said it’s considering adding Nsenene to its in-flight menu.

The airline tweeted:

Uganda Airlines’ attention has been drawn to a video of passengers on our flight no. 446 to Dubai on 26th November 2021 from Entebbe engaged in purchasing a local delicacy (Nsenene).

“This happened at a time our passengers were boarding, and it was disruptive. We don’t condone the acts of the passenger seeking Nsenene and low standards of serving it to people who were buying it. We will not take conduct on board lightly because it undermines the spirit of the National Carrier.

We have picked lessons from the incident. Some of our customers enjoy Nsenene. We understand that they were not in plenty this season hence the excitement. We are considering adding Nsenene, a Ugandan delicacy, to our menu for regional and international flights on request. The addition of Nsenene on our menu will bring the Uganda culture to the world. Our key products are people and the experience.

This move will boost tourism marketing and the livelihood of people in the grasshopper value chain going forward. We arein talks with passengers involved, and if there is another occurrence of such conduct on Board, the passenger will be off-loaded without further consideration. N o one should be exposed to an unruly market experience on our flight. The unacceptable disruptive behavior prevents the performance of critical duties of the flight crew.

Management

Translation: “The passengers selling grasshoppers shouldn’t have done that. It was a potential for danger. But apparently, a lot of our passengers really like grasshoppers. So we’re considering adding them to our flights.”

Well, how awesome is THAT? 🙂
