Flight Attendant’s “Stupid Human Trick”: Fun Or Gross?

by SharonKurheg

Flight attendants have a difficult job. So I don’t blame them for occasionally coming up with something that’s done specifically to lighten the mood a little.

But sometimes the fun and games might go a little too far and cross the line.

Case in point is a video that was posted on Reddit not long ago, of an airline crew that was filmed sliding snacks on the floor during take off. Since the plane is at an angle, the (granted, wrapped) snacks slide towards the back of the plane, unless passengers pick them up. It must have happened relatively recently because everyone is wearing masks. Click on the video below to take a look:

The video had over 300 comments and a 98% “upvote” ( meaning people agreed/liked). Replies to the video ran the gamut:

  • Person sitting at the window seats 🙁
  • I think this would actually be pretty fun, airplanes are so stiff and uptight … I love seeing the fun flight attendants!
  • I had pretzels thrown to me on a small plane once!
  • This is honestly really refreshing and comical for a “this was my flight” video. Since the world went off the deep end with covid all I have seen is horror stories of “this was my flight”. I love this .
  • Just think of all the shoes that just walked on that area and where they have recently been. Standing in front of a urinal, for starters. Ewwww
  • The frontier way
  • I once flew on a plane so small, my inflight beverage was an unopened can of soda, rolled down the aisle to me this way
  • I would not touch anything on that floor…
  • Actually, former airport employee, our cleaning crew is very serious. Before every flight the cleaning crew is in there going from top to bottom disinfecting and wiping down, even before COVID. And if you happen to be on the first flight of the day (midnight) you get a mega deep clean with inspection!
  • Yeah, all in my head is just you’re eating snacks from the floor
  • Good thing the snacks are inside the package.
  • Do you know how many things touch your food products before you get your germ filled hands on them?
  • That blonde lady is hungry…
  • It was an accident turned into a joke. (this person, 6Wasted6Youth6, replied with the same comment at least 4 times)
  • I had this happen to me once on a Southwest flight; the crew was fun!

My take on it

Frankly, I’m kind of torn 😉

The snacks, whatever they were, were clearly packaged. If there’s no visible dirt on the packaging and you wipe it off thoroughly, AND clean your hands between that wiping and tearing the package open and eating, I think the amount of germs you’d pick up is negligible for someone with a typical immune system.

On the other hand, there’s still the knowledge that the food slid on the floor. Even the plane was just cleaned before the passengers arrived (or maybe it was the first flight of the day and it was a “deep” cleaning, those coupla hundred people JUST WALKED on that floor. So there are the psychological ramifications of eating something from the floor.

Oh, and there was also this reply:

  • Well that was funny but also probably the last time it’ll ever happen. Its definitely violating safety rules. Though to be accurate this wont be takeoff, or it’ll be insanely illegal and they’d get fired. Probably during a climb, but still not ideal to have passengers moving when there might be sudden changes in climb rate etc.

Well, yeah…there’s that too.

But what do you say? Would you eat those snacks if you got them on a plane that way?
