Marriott Suite Night Award Extensions Are Active

by joeheg

Marriott Bonvoy flooded the newsfeeds at the end of October when it announced several upcoming changes to the program. The main story was the eventual ending of hotel categories and award charts, which sent a chill up the spine of anyone who collects Bonvoy points.

There were several other announcements about the extension of loyalty benefits into 2022. This included delaying the expiration of points, extending free night awards (which came a little too late for me since I burned a few before they expired), and extending Suite Night Awards.

Marriott lets Platinum members choose from a series of awards when they reach 50 and 75 nights. One of those awards is five Suite Night Awards which can be applied to a reservation to increase the likelihood of getting an improved room or a suite. This benefit is often confused by members because using a Suite Night Award does not guarantee you a suite if there is one available.

The intricacies of SNAs would be its own post. Instead, I wanted to let you know that Marriott has finally updated the expiration dates of SNAs due to expire at the end of the year. This means you can now apply them to hotel stays in the first half of 2022.

After the announcement, I looked at our Marriott Bonvoy account and saw our remaining SNAs.

I burned 2 of the nights for 2021 for an upgraded room at the Residence Inn Cape Canaveral Cocoa Beach and the other three were set to expire at the end of the year.

This meant I couldn’t apply them to our stay at Waikiki. If I used an SNA, Marriot’s system would take the ones that expire at the end of 2022. There was no rush since the upgrades don’t start to clear until 5 nights before your stay. However, I could see how some people could end up wasting SNAs.

When I logged into our account today, I noticed the expiration dates had been updated.

I went to our reservation and applied the three nights to our stay.

When I was finished, I went back to the account to ensure the SNAs expiring first were the ones they used. Everything looked OK since the 5 remaining nights are good until the end of 2022.

Final Thoughts

If you had any expiring Suite Night Awards or Free Night Award certificates that were due to expire at the end of 2021, check your Marriott Bonvoy account to see that they’ve been extended through the end of June 2022.
