Places that garner the attention of tourists, especially those that fall under the umbrella of religion, sometimes have dress codes. Having to cover (or not cover) your head, or not wear something too revealing is the norm and accepted at places such as Mecca, the Western Wall or the Vatican. There are even whole countries in the Middle East that have requirements for dress, especially for women.
There are few such tourist-gathering places in the U.S., save for some restaurants, that require you to dress a certain way. However, a new attraction in New York City, although it doesn’t require a certain dress code, it certainly encourages one.
NYC’s newest tourist attraction, which just opened last week, is called SUMMIT One Vanderbilt. One Vanderbilt itself is a 93-story supertall skyscraper at the corner of 42nd St. and Vanderbilt Avenue, in midtown. Most of the building is used for offices. However there’s a brand new observation deck on the 91st through 93rd floors, and most of it is made out of glass and mirrors. It’s designed in such a way that if people are standing directly above you on a higher floor, you can look up and see them.
And because of this, they strongly recommend people not wear skirts. Or dresses. Or kilts.
I’m sure you understand ;-).
The issue was revealed (OH YES I DID!) when a focus group visited the site just before it opened. And that’s when someone told management that patrons could potentially look up and see much more than what they may have bargained for. So the good folks at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt quickly added a caveat to their website:
Please dress appropriately to avoid unwanted exposure on glass and mirrored floors. We recommend wearing pants, shorts, or tights when possible.
Oh, and if you don’t notice this small print? As of this writing, Summit is willing to provide a free pair of stretchy black shorts upon request.
And if you’re an exhibitionist, well, you be you. 😉
Tickets for SUMMIT start at $39 for adults (and cost an extra $10 if you visit during sunset). New York City residents get a small discount.
