Wow! TSA Pre-Check Renewal Fee Is Decreasing!

by SharonKurheg

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced today that it plans to lower the online renewal fee for PreCheck from $85 to $70.

The lower fee will go into effect on October 1.

According to the TSA, “This fee change represents a $15 reduction in the cost of renewing online, while still allowing TSA to cover the costs of operating the program, which includes performing a security threat assessment and adjudicating applications. Over 95 percent of renewals occur online, as most travelers find this to be a quick and easy way to maintain membership in the program.

The cost of an initial enrollment and in-person renewal will remain the same $85.

“TSA PreCheck was launched eight years ago to provide expedited airport security screening for low-risk travelers,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “Our TSA PreCheck program improves overall security and we will continue to look for ways to enhance the benefits of this program for our trusted travelers.”

Here is the official documentation of the change.

For those who want to avoid long lines at the airport, TSA PreCheck allows low-risk travelers to have streamlined screening experience at more than 200 U.S. airports and with over 80 participating airlines.

Over the last month, 96% of travelers in TSA PreCheck lanes waited less than five minutes to go through airport security checkpoints.

If I have to take off my belt, shoes, wallet, phone, jacket, and everything else, so please remind me why I got TSA precheck to begin with?

The problem with this is that there are so many people using PreCheck now that I’ve been to a few airports where the PreCheck Lane was more busy than the standard line. Now I’ve had to add clear membership.
