Traveling To Reykjavik? It’s Getting Easier To Find Places To Use Your Points

by joeheg

When I started to search for places to stay in Reykjavik, my first move was to look if there was anywhere I could use my stash of hotel points. Pickings used to be slim with only a few Radisson properties and one Hilton hotel in the city’s main tourist area.

Things are changing and with a combination of the hotel brands expanding their footprints by partnerships and the development of new properties, there are now several options in the city, with even more coming.

Marriott Bonvoy

The first hotels in Reykjavik that you could book with Marriott points were the Ion City Hotel and the 101 Hotel.  Both are part of the Design Hotels brand and are category 7 properties costing between 50,000 and 70,000 points a night. There’s another hotel on the way for Marriott in Reykjavik. The much-delayed EDITION appears to be close to opening as it’s now accepting reservations starting on October 12th. This top-tier category 8 hotel costs between 70,000 and 100,000 points a night. From what we saw, I’d suggest staying away for a while after it opens.

Hilton

Hilton has 2 hotels in Reykjavik. The Konsulat Hotel is part of the Curio collection. Since Hilton doesn’t print an award chart, standard award prices vary between 52,000 and 73,000 points per night.

There is also the Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre. Award nights here cost between 46,000 and 80,000 points.

Of the two, the Konsulat seems to have a classier feel, while the Canopy has more of a modern vibe.

Radisson

For a while, one of the only hotel chains where you could redeem hotel points for free nights in Reykjavik was Radisson.

They have two hotels in the city. The fanciest of them is the Radisson Blu 1919 Hotel. It has a wonderful location and the building looks amazing.

Award nights go for 75,000 Radisson Rewards points. If you live in the US, you’ll have to transfer points from your Radisson Americas account to the Radisson program used by the rest of the world. Here’s an explanation of how to do this.

The other Radisson hotel in Reykjavik is the Radisson Blu Saga Hotel but it appears the property is currently closed. I couldn’t find an explanation why.

IHG Hotels

I was surprised to find that IHG has hotels in Reykjavik. IHG Rewards members now have access to the Mr and Mrs Smith brand hotels. There are two of them in the city. There’s the Kvosin Hotel and the Sandhotel. It’s hard to tell how expensive the hotels are but expect to pay 60,000 IHG points and up per night.

One other hotel that’s part of the Mr and Mrs Smith portfolio is the Retreat at Blue Lagoon. While not in the city, this spa hotel is a popular place to visit. The search engine said that reward nights were available for 200,000 points but I could never find any nights with award space.

Hyatt

Hyatt doesn’t have any properties available in Reykjavik, but that’s going to change. There are plans for a Hyatt Centric to open in 2022.

Final Thoughts

While finding a chain hotel to use your points used to be difficult, the number of properties bookable for awards has increased dramatically. Of course, there are plenty of other places available, like the KeaHotels property where we stayed.

Although it is not located in the city center, you missed the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica hotel property.

Thank you for the reminder that I need to write an article at The Gate about my two stays there.

True. I stuck to hotels more in the city center because I think that’s where most people visiting would like to stay. I’ll keep a look out for your upcoming post.
