Don’t Forget To Sign Up For IHG’s Summer Promotion Before Your First Stay

by joeheg

Hey, did you hear the news? It’s understandable if you weren’t thinking about hotel promotions back in May, but IHG Rewards launched its summer promotion last month. They’re apparently thinking that people will be traveling much more this summer (and all signs show that they’re right). The promo offers up to 3X IHG points for stays until August 16, 2021, but there’s a catch that may involve moving stays to IHG to maximize the points earned.

  • Earn 2x bonus points on your second stay
  • Earn 3x bonus points on 3+ stays
  • IHG Rewards co-brand cardmembers earn an additional 3,000 points on the second stay and 3,000 more points on the third stay.

Bonus points are paid on the base points for each qualifying stay during the promotion period. Since IHG Rewards members earn 10 points per dollar, they’ll get 20x points on the 2nd stay and 30x points on the 3rd and each subsequent stay. Except for Candlewood and Staybridge Suites which earn 5 points per dollar.

I conservatively value IHG points at 0.5 cents each and with triple points, you’ll get back points worth 15% of the base price of the room (not including taxes and hotel fees.) That’s a pretty good promotion if you’re thinking of staying at several IHG hotels this summer.

You need to register for the promotion before your stay for it to count. The landing page can be found here.

Since we’re working on burning our free night certificates and then using hotel points for our stays, I don’t think we’ll be able to take advantage of this promotion. I’m not a huge fan of promotions that make you stay multiple times to take advantage of the best rewards. Suppose you’re only going a long trip this summer and staying at the same hotel, no bonus points for you. However, if you’re going on a road trip and staying at a bunch of roadside hotels, it might make sense to look at a HI Express or Avid. Even a Candlewood Suites counts as a stay to get you towards the bonus levels.
