The First Thing To Do After Getting The AMEX Gold Card

by joeheg

It’s been about a month since I was approved for the American Express Gold Card. While it took a while for the card to be delivered due to the winter weather, I’m working on spending the $4,000 over 6 months required to earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points.

I hadn’t had much chance to use the card for anything besides online purchases until now, but last weekend we went back to Vero Beach to spend the weekend at our Disney Vacation Club timeshare. Since the only sit-down restaurant at DVC only offers indoor dining, and we’re just not there yet, we’d be eating out for our meals. I also knew that the grab-and-go option and the bar at DVC codes as dining on credit cards.

My new AMEX Gold card pays 4x Membership Rewards on dining expenses. What better way to earn bonus points while meeting the spending requirement.

Knowing I’d be using the card to pay for restaurants during our extended weekend, I linked my AMEX Gold Card to an airline dining program. I chose the Delta Dining program where I earn 3 Delta Skymiles per dollar, but you could choose any program since they’re all run by the same company on the back end.

During our trip, we spontaneously picked places off of Yelp! that had good ratings and plenty of pictures of their outdoor dining areasWhile we enjoyed our meals at both places, they were made even better by the emails I received once we returned home.

I ended up earning 4x AMEX Membership Rewards, 3x Delta Skymiles and I’m closer to meeting the spending requirement for the sign-up bonus for the AMEX Gold Card.

While this is the first thing you should do before eating out with the card, the next most important thing is to add it to your UBER and/or UBER Eats and Grubhub, Seamless and Boxed accounts to take advantage of the $10 statement credits from each category.

While the AMEX Gold card has a $250 annual fee, the 4x points on dining and supermarkets are almost the best out there and you can earn back most of the annual fee by taking advantage of the statement credits.

But whatever you do, don’t forget to add the AMEX Gold Card to one of your dining accounts.

Love my Gold card! ALL dining and groceries go on Gold! Thanks for the great idea about linking with an airline dining program.
Sorry to say I have only two ‘nearby’ options when I search my United MileagePlus account. Even worse, since I live in a less than populated location, both are really not that appealing and are over 30 miles away!!

I end up getting miles way more often when we’re traveling than when we’re at home.
