Scotland Did Something Creative & Funny. Minnesota Said “Hold My Beer”

by SharonKurheg

People from Scotland have an awesome sense of humor. Or, if you will, humour. I mean, all you have to do is watch an old Billy Connolly comedy routine, or read this post from Bored Panda to realize just how funny Scots can be. And they’re so creative! Add the two together, along with their unique personality traits and, well, where else but in Scotland would someone start an online petition aimed at trolling former president Donald Trump? 😉

Anyway, since 2006 or so, Scotland residents have been encouraged to help name the country’s fleet of snowplows. Well, they call them gritters. They even have an official government website so you can follow where each snowplow gritter is on the main highways during the winter. And it’s fun to see that they have names such as Spready Mercury, Lord Coldemort, Sled Zepplin, You’re A Blizzard Harry, Megameltasaurus, Buzz Iceclear, Sweet Child O’ Brine, etc.

And that’s just for this year. Past years’ names included Gritty Gritty Bang Bang, Sir Salter Scott, Luke Snowwalker, Grittie McVittie, Ready Spready Go, and countless others. It’s all in good fun.

Anyway, I don’t know if officials in Minnesota got wind of the “Name The Gritter” contests or not. But this year, the state’s Department of Transportation held a “Name A Snowplow” contest to name eight gritters snowplows, one for each of their eight districts. The top 8 winners, in order, were:

  • Plowy McPlowFace – Metro District
  • Ope, Just Gonna Plow Right Past Ya – District 4
  • Duck Duck Orange Truck – District 1
  • Plow Bunyan – District 2
  • Snowbi Wan Kenobi – District 6
  • F. Salt Fitzgerald – District 7
  • Darth Blader – District 3
  • The Truck Formerly Known As Plow – District 8

There were 50 finalists to choose from and individuals were able to vote for up to eight choices. It was apparently popular because there were over 120,000 voters! Anyway, click here to see all 50 finalists. (From Joe, I love that they ended up naming a plow honoring Prince)

No official website to follow the MN snowplows yet. Maybe next year 😉

What? No tribute to Minnesota Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan? What happened to “The Answer, My Friend, is Blowin’ in the Wind” and “A Hard Snow’s A-Gonna Fall?”
