Survey: People Are Willing To Give Up Sex To Travel Again

by SharonKurheg

For those who love to travel, it’s been a tough year.

For some, it’s apparently been a REALLY tough year. How tough? Well…

trivago (the T is intentionally in lowercase) is a German transnational technology company specializing in internet-related services and products in the hotel, lodging and metasearch fields. They’re a well-known travel company that offers searches, comparisons and, through third-party companies, bookings for hotels for people in nearly 70 countries.

Anyway, trivago recently surveyed over 2,000 adults in the U.S. and U.K. to get an idea of how they feel about travel – specifically how they’re considering, dreaming about and planning travel – in 2021.

Not surprisingly, when asked about how they feel regarding their first trip post-COVID, the majority said it made them feel “excited” (55% average) and/or “happy” (52.5% average).

I don’t need to tell you that travel is a huge part of life for a lot of people and is perceived as a form of self-care. In fact, over 80% of respondents in trivago’s survey either somewhat or strongly agreed that travel is a part of a well-rounded life, and the vast majority (U.S. 84%; U.K. 87%) see travel as fundamental to having a good life. So being prevented from doing so has been a hardship. And apparently, people are willing to sacrifice quite a bit if they felt they could travel right now.

What would they give up? Well, 25% of the respondents said they’d give up all of their savings to be able to travel. 20% would give up their partner. Almost half (U.S. 48%, U.K. 41% – total average of 45%) would be willing to give up their job if given a chance to travel. And a whopping average of 39% of them said they’d give up sex for a year if they could go somewhere right away.

That’s…pretty significant.

While we’ve all been cooped up for the better part of the last year, many of us (U.S. 57%; U.K. 56%, as per those surveyed) have picked up new hobbies and an average of 2/3 of us are at least somewhat likely to go on a vacation that incorporates said hobby, once they can freely travel again.

Oh, and the #1 choice of a “dream vacation” right now? Spending time with family and friends (U.S. 26%; U.K. 34%). This was especially so for seniors (U.S. 35%; U.K. 47%).

And finally, once we all feel safe in traveling again, and are allowed to do so freely, it looks as if people are going to try to make up for lost travel time – over 2/3 of trivago’s respondents said they plan to travel even more than they used to, once the pandemic is over.

With vaccines getting into more and more arms every day, we’re hopefully over the hump and being able to do nonessential travel to wherever we want, whenever we want, with all of us feeling safe doing so, will hopefully happen more sooner than later.

And I’m glad. {Note from Joe: And so am I}

The Trivago poll was conducted from Jan 3-9 with a margin of error of 3 percentage points. 2,000 people were surveyed (1,011 U.S., 989 U.K.)
