Times Square Is Getting A Margaritaville Hotel With An Outdoor Pool Deck, But The Geography Is On Island Time

by joeheg

Jimmy Buffett has managed to turn his top-10 hit song from 1977 into a global super-brand. Starting with restaurants in tourist-trap locations, the brand had expanded into hotels and even entire communities of vacation homes for those aged “55 and better,” looking to live the laid-back island lifestyle without going to the islands.

One major tourist location without a Margaritaville was Manhattan. That’s going to change with the opening of the Margaritaville Hotel and Restaurant complex at Times Square. The 239 room hotel claims to be the only Times Square location with an outdoor pool deck. However, the hotel isn’t really IN Times Square. Times Square’s generally accepted boundaries go from 47th to 42nd Streets at the junction of Broadway and 7th Avenue. The Times Square Margaritaville complex will be on the corner of 7th Avenue and 40th St. You’re just as close to the Port Authority Bus Terminal as you are to Times Square. But I guess for the island lifestyle, that’s close enough.

Besides the novelty, I can’t see the appeal of a pool deck on the fourth floor of a hotel overlooking 7th Avenue. I’d think the traffic noise and surrounding skyscrapers defeat the purpose of thinking you’re on island time.

The rates for this hotel haven’t yet been published but you’ll probably pay a premium for the Margaritaville experience. They’re also not a member of any loyalty program so you’ll pay out of pocket instead of using points.

I’m sure the Parrotheads and everyone else who loves Margaritaville will flock to the location when it opens later in 2021. As far as the on-site restaurants, it’s another option besides Ray’s Pizza, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Planet Hollywood, Red Lobster or Olive Garden.
