Happy Wednesday to all our travel friends, both near and far. Here are some articles we’ve read from other bloggers (and other sources) that we think you may like, so we’re passing them along.
- Now that Key West has voted to keep the mega cruise ships from its port, getting to the island suddenly got much more difficult. Fortunately for local tourism, American Airlines is picking up some of that slack by starting daily non-stop flights to the Conch Republic from Orlando, Tampa and Philadelphia. That should lower the cost of flying there since passengers on American previously had to connect in Miami.
- Denver International Airport has always had its share of kooky theories surrounding it. The airport has tended to steer into the fray by putting up posters mocking the urban legends on construction walls and even having a talking gargoyle openly joking about how the Illuminati run the airport. Now it’s United Airlines that’s getting in on the fun by producing a tongue-in-cheek video featuring some of the most popular theories and trying to explain what the real meaning behind them is.
- The CDC has dropped its No Sail Order for cruise ships in the US, but there are still many requirements the cruise lines need to meet before they can start sailing again. One of those requirements is to conduct “simulation” cruises using volunteer passengers (this will prove the cruise line’s ability to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission onboard). That means they need volunteers. Some cruise lines are putting out feelers to rabid cruisers, looking for ones who are willing to be the test subjects. For me, that one would be a hard pass.
- US National Parks have always offered free admission to active-duty military members and their dependents. Starting today, Veterans Day, all Veterans and Gold Star Families will be granted free access to national parks, wildlife refuges and other federal lands managed by the Department of the Interior. As the son of a Vietnam veteran, I’m glad to see those who served in the military getting something back for all they gave for us.
- One of the perks of the World of Hyatt credit card is that you can earn an additional free night at a category 1-4 hotel by spending $15,000 on the card in your cardmember year. Chase is changing that policy to go by a calendar year instead of one based on when you applied for the card. Depending on how much you spend on the card, you need to pay attention if you want to try and earn an extra free night or don’t waste spend going to expire at the end of the year.
