Our Most Expensive Hotel Stay Ever

by joeheg

For whatever reason, I recently decided to look back at our past trips. I’ve already written about our favorite trips and our most memorable hotels but I never wrote about our most expensive hotel stay ever.

I’m qualifying this because there may have been more expensive hotel rooms we’ve stayed at either during a trip with Adventures by Disney or when used points and a suite upgrade to stay in the suite-only wing of a London hotel. It’s also not including the time I used Disney Vacation Club points to stay at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.

This is a stay we paid cash out of pocket.

To be honest, I’d even forgotten we’d paid this much for a hotel until I did the research for this post. Turns out, the most we’ve spent for a hotel room is a little over $500 a night.

When you’re traveling and celebrating, there’s always the temptation to spend more than you’d usually because you only live once, right? So when you’re on you’re 10th anniversary trip and going back to Hawaii for the first time since your honeymoon, you might as well splurge.

I remember our stay at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel on Hawai’i. It was our first time staying on the Kona side of the island, so I decided to go all out. If you’re going to be staying at a hotel on the beach in Hawaii, you might as well have a room that faces the ocean. I went and booked an oceanfront guestroom.

I don’t know why but every picture of the beach and ocean I took from the room turned out blurry.

Even the picture of me in the room was fuzzy.

The room was right on the ocean and we could hear the waves lap up on the beach from our bed. This was a nice thing because the first night at the hotel I came down with a horrible case of food poisoning: chills, gastric distress, the whole 9 yards. I spent an entire day of our anniversary trip holed up in our costly hotel room, listening to the ocean.

I can’t forget to mention that this was the same day that Davy Jones of the Monkees passed away, because if you didn’t know, that’s what happens when Sharon’s on vacation. So while I was sick in the room, Sharon was mourning one of her biggest and longest lasting childhood crushes. Great times. Well worth the money we paid for the room.

Once I was able to get out of bed, we did enjoy walking around the grounds. When leaving the hotel, we managed to get a picture of the two of us in the open-air lobby. I look about 10 pounds lighter than when we arrived 🙂

Was it worth it? I dunno. What price can you put on memories? 🙂 None of what happened on our stay could be expected and if you’re going to feel miserable, it helps to have the beauty of nature around you to raise your spirits.

If the time is right, I’d surely spend that much for a hotel room again. It just needs to be the perfect place for the right reason.

After enough time problems turn into adventures when you look back. As an aside, I’d love to hear about using DVC points to stay at the Plaza.
