When it comes to surveys, Sharon’s the one in the family who usually will fill them out (Note from Sharon: Sharon worked for a marketing research company in the Staten Island Mall throughout college. Yes, Sharon was an annoying person with a clipboard). I used to take the time to complete one after every flight, hotel stay and rental car but eventually, it became too much. Surveys kept getting longer, forcing me to comment, asking about every little thing.
However, you can occasionally get some insight into a company’s future plans by filling out surveys. New products and changes to benefits will be tested to see which ones are important to customers. That’s why I signed up for the Barclays Survey Panel.
In the past year, I’ve only received two requests. The most recent one was only a few questions and they focused on how much you stayed in hotels, timeshares and home rental properties before COVID-19 and what are your future plans.
To get a baseline, they asked for how many nights I stayed from January 2019 to today.
Then they asked me to break down which chains, timeshares or home rental services I used for those stays.
Then they asked for my plans from now until December 2020. This was tougher to answer because while we have plans for the fall, I still have no idea where we’d be staying.
Then they went back to our previous stays and asked why we hadn’t used Airbnb or VRBO. I think the survey is right on with the main reasons people don’t use these services.
Finally, there was a question about if I was a host on one of the home-rental property sites.
From the survey, Barclays must see a trend that people are looking more to Airbnb or VRBO instead of staying in hotels. They could capture more of this spending by adding a home rental bonus category to some cards or even by partnering with one of the services.
