Where The World Wants To Vacation In 2021

by SharonKurheg

Most people have had to put most, if not all of their 2020 vacation plans on hold this year. Some cancelled their travels altogether, thanks to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. Others, like us, just fast forwarded them to a year from now and have our fingers crossed that we’ll be able to go then.

Kuoni, a travel company out of the U.K., did some analysis of Google Trends to see which countries travelers from 131 countries most looked for in terms of vacation destinations in 2021.

This was their methodology:

Google search data (searching all languages) was used to establish the average monthly search volume in each country for the terms ‘[destination] 2021’ and ‘[destination] holiday 2021’ for hundreds of the most popular destinations. The most searched for destination was then used as the top destination for 2021 for that country. Data was from April 2020. The most popular destinations by continent and globally were decided by the destinations that were most frequently the top destination by country.

Here are some responses:
People in this country: Most want to go to:
United States Japan
Argentina Brazil
Australia Fiji
Barbados Sri Lanka
Brazil Aruba
Canada Japan
Costa Rica Peru
Egypt Norway
Iceland Singapore
Italy Saudi Arabia
Japan Philippines
Luxembourg Cuba
Mexico Qatar
Morocco Norway
Russia Mexico
South Africa Thailand
South Korea UAE
Spain Italy
U.K. The Maldives
Venezuela United States

Obviously, some destinations came up more often than others (i.e. North Korea didn’t come up at all). The top 5 were:

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)
  • Canada (3-way tie with U.S. and Qatar)
  • United States
  • Qatar
  • Egypt

Pretty cool, huh?
