It’s been a while since we’ve seen a major travel company run a huge contest. Just like when I was happy to get a credit card pitch in the mail, I view promotions as a sign that even if we’re a long way from it, things are on a path to normalcy.
Southwest Airlines launched its “Summer How You Wanna” sweepstakes last week. They will pick 25 winners at random each week who will receive 40,000 Rapid Rewards points each. Southwest points are worth about 1.3 cents, so each 40,000 point prize is worth $520.
How do you enter? From Southwest:
- Visit @SouthwestAir on Instagram on July 6, 13, 20, and 27 to learn what we wanna see.
- Post your favorite destinations or getaways by tagging @SouthwestAir and using hashtags #WannaGetAway and #Sweepstakes for your chance to win 40,000 Rapid Rewards® bonus points!
- We’ll pick 25 winners at random each week for four weeks, for a total giveaway of up to four million bonus points.
You need to be on Instagram to enter and supposedly you need to check each week about what picture to post, but looking at the rules, it seems like entries from previous weeks will roll over into the next week. That means the earlier you enter, the better your odds.
I’d enter, but one of the first restrictions bars me from winning.
Open to legal residents of the 50 U.S. and D.C. (excluding Alaska, Florida, New York, and Rhode Island) age 18 or older at time of entry.

There are a ton more rules about what pictures you can use which can be found at the contest’s website. Some of the most significant restrictions are that the pics have to be yours and can not have any minors in the shot.
Since we’re excluded from entering right off the bat, I hope some of you can enter and possibly win 40,000 Rapid Rewards points. Remember that Southwest points no longer expire, so even if you don’t plan on traveling this year, it could make sense to enter anyway.
