When you’re at a Disney resort or enter a Disney park, you’re surrounded by what is considered to be a “show.” That’s why Disney employees are called “cast members,” anything you can see is considered “on stage” and anything behind-the-scenes is considered “back stage.”
Shows have stories so any ride you go on at Disney has some sort of backstory (that’s usually been embellished by cast members and superfans over the years LOL). The same goes for the differently themed lands in the parks.
When you enter Disneyland or the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, you go under the train tracks and are immersed in an area themed after an idealized turn-of-the-last-century middle American town. It’s called Main Street U.S.A.
Main Street has U.S.A. has a variety of things you would expect to find in a Midwestern town circa 1910. There’s a town square, with a flag/flag pole in the center. A barbershop. The fire department. An ice cream shop. A place that sells hot dogs, with a pianist who plays ragtime music around the corner. There’s a bakery too, although nowadays it’s a Starbucks (but a very well-themed Starbucks!).
Another thing you see on Main Street U.S.A. is flags. Lots of them. And each one is just a little bit different from the big flag that’s raised and lowered in Town Square each day (even while the parks have been closed). The reason for all the flags and why they’re all different is all part of the backstory of Main Street U.S.A. Take a look:
