Offices Re-Opening For Global Entry Interviews? Just Kidding!

by SharonKurheg

It was just a couple of days ago that we wrote the Trusted Traveler Programs enrollment centers across the country, which had been closed since mid-March, were going start reopening on July 6th. That would mean conditionally approved Global Entry, SENTRI and FAST (U.S.-Mexico) applicants would finally be able to complete their in-person interviews at Trusted Traveler Programs enrollment centers in the U.S. and hopefully get their respective status.

So much for that.

Our friend Dev at The World According To Dev contacted me earlier today. She’s been trying to get her Global Entry interview done since January and after a couple of cancellations because of the COVID-related Trusted Traveler Programs enrollment center closings, she finally had an interview set up for July 16th.

So much for that.

Dev got an email today that said her July 16th interview was cancelled because the offices were going to remain closed after all, due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases.

TrustedTraveler

Greetings: Based upon the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, plans to resume TTP enrollment center (EC) operations on July 6, 2020 will be paused and TTP enrollment centers will remain closed until at least August 10, 2020. This temporary closure includes all public access to Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST enrollment locations. Applicants are encouraged to monitor their e-mail and Trusted Traveler Programs account for additional information and/or updates. Regards, Jonathan Christian Supervisory Officer U.S. Customers and border Protection Detroit Metropolitan Airport

Dev lives in Michigan and  was thinking/hoping that maybe it was just the Detroit enrollment centers that were going to remain closed.

So I went to the Dep’t of Home Security’s website and sure enough, all of their offices are closed through at least August 10th:

Out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of minimizing exposure and controlling the spread of the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Outbreak, all US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler Program Enrollment Centers will suspend operations until at least August 10, 2020. This temporary closure includes all public access to Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST enrollment locations. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience through this process. Enrollment on Arrival remains operational at participating airports. For locations please visit https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry/enrollment-arrival.

So they re-closed before they even got the chance to re-open.

Awesomesauce.

Many thanks to Dev for allowing us to share her story!

If you are a government employee, the Covid crisis is like manna from heaven. Usually, its easy enough for these civil servants to pretend to work, but there is no faking your annoying daily commute — and Covid has provided a justification to relieve these people of that indignity as well. Government and the people it really serves (and that doesn’t include you) have every incentive to keep this going forever.
