The One Alaska Cruise You Can Still Take This Summer

by SharonKurheg

The 2020 Alaska cruise season had been questionable since mid-May, when the CDC put a “pause” to all large cruise ships through the end of July, due to COVID-19.  However, it was deemed dead in the water after Canada’s announcement about cruise ships in late May. There were (and are) still ways to enter Alaska (5th article down), but some people go on Alaska cruises because, besides wanting to see Alaska, they want to cruise. So there was, understandably, a lot of disappointment.

Fortunately, there’s still a way to have the best of both worlds…

UnCruise Adventures is a U.S.-flagged, small-ship adventure company. They have recently announced they will resume their Alaska sailings on August 1.

“As one of the first companies to restart service, this is a pivotal moment for the travel industry and Alaska,” said Dan Blanchard, the owner and CEO of UnCruise Adventures. “These initial departures represent a re-framing of what adventure travelers are increasingly looking for, small groups, inclusion, and human connection.”

The CDC’s no-sail order is only for boats and ships that carry at least 250 people. But UnCruise’s vessels are boutique yachts and small boats that carry no more than 22 to 86 guests.

The Alaska sailing that starts August 1 is a seven-night Glacier Bay National Park Adventure. It starts and ends in Juneau, on the 60-passenger Wilderness Adventurer.

The itinerary includes two days in Glacier Bay, which should be really really cool since there won’t be any large ships there. The voyage doesn’t visit ports or local communities but instead focuses on adventure activities, nature and wildlife. So think remote wilderness hikes, shoreline kayaks, and other nature-based activities.

UnCruise Adventures, of course, has its protocols to ensure its passengers are and remain healthy. Passengers are required to complete pre-travel health questionnaires and must submit a certificate that proves they’ve recently tested negative for COVID-19. Travelers and crew members who have elevated temperatures, cold- or flu-like symptoms, or other concerning symptoms during the preboarding screening process won’t be allowed to board the ship.
