Although year-over-year numbers are still horrific, hotels in the U.S. are slowly seeing more week-to-week occupancy, according to an industry marketplace insight provider.
For the week of May 3rd through May 9th, the occupancy rate in U.S. hotels was 30.1%. In previous weeks, occupancy levels have been:
- April 26th to May 2nd: 28.6%
- April 19th to 25th: 26.0%
- April 12th to 18th: 23.4%
- April 5th to 11th: 21.0%
it’s still, obviously, nowhere near the norm, as evidenced by year-over-year comparisons. i.e. in comparison to the week of May 5-11, 2019, occupancy rates were down 55.9%.
Year-over-year comparisons notwithstanding, the numbers show that as states’ lockdowns, quarantines, and stay-at-home orders are eased, people are indeed going out and staying in hotels again.
Reversely, states and counties that still have lockdown orders in place have lower occupancy rates. For example, Oahu, an island in Hawaii, which is a state that includes strict 2-week quarantine orders upon entering, on top of keep-at-home orders (they also only have had 587 cases; 3rd lowest in the country), currently has a hotel occupancy rate of 10.3%.
As more states ease restrictions and more people feel safer with travel, the number of hotel rooms being rented should continue to improve. Well, as long as we don’t see that almost inevitable “second wave,” anyway. Then all bets are off.

The local Staybridge / Residence Inn where I am saw occupancy fall under 15% after the stay at home order. This week they got back up to 40%. Mostly construction workers.
