I Was Eligible For The 125,000 AMEX Platinum Sign Up Bonus, And Then I Woke Up

File this in the “Things that only happen to those who are obsessed with points and miles” category.

I’ve heard several friends say that since they’ve been under “lockdown” due to the coronavirus, they’re having strange dreams. They’re not alone. Coronavirus dreams are a real thing. Most of the dreams you hear are about the fear of impending doom, isolation or uncertainty of going out into public.

Not me. I dreamed that I was targeted for a 125,000 point bonus for the AMEX Platinum card. 🙂

I spent the evening like I usually do, writing posts and reading what I’ve missed for the day. I’m not going to say for sure, but I’m guessing it was a post from Nick on Frequent Miler that led to my fantasy. He wrote about a targeted offer from AMEX for the personal Platinum card for 125,000 Membership Rewards with only a $5,000 spending requirement. Top that with AMEX allowing you six months to reach the requirement instead of the usual three and the extra bonuses AMEX is throwing in for the Platinum card and I’d be tempted to sign up if targeted. Even if I canceled the card a few years ago because I said it wasn’t worth it.

Imagine my excitement when I checked Sharon’s account (I’ve already had the Platinum Card, so I’m ineligible for a bonus) and found out she was targeted for the offer. #Winning! It only took a second for me to decide that I was going to sign her up for the card.

And suddenly, there I was, sitting up in bed. Startled, I actually was starting to get up to continue the sign-up process on the computer in the office. Then it dawned on me. I dreamed the whole thing. There was no targeted offer.

I went back to sleep but that wasn’t the end. I left myself a note on my iPad to check our AMEX bonuses, just in case the dream was actually a premonition of things to come. Turns out, it wasn’t.

Since Sharon already has the Green Card, the only thing AMEX is offering her is to upgrade to the Platinum Card for no bonus.

I decided to look at my account. I’ve gotten rid of all of my AMEX personal charge cards, so I had an offer, which I wasn’t eligible for. It’s the same as any other referral link.

My dream turned into disappointment. I wonder what would have happened if I didn’t wake up in the middle of the dream. I guess I could have finished the application page only to get the AMEX pop-up telling me I was ineligible for the bonus because AMEX thinks we’re gaming their system…. and then the AMEX RATs arrived.

Now that would have quickly turned my fantasy into a nightmare.
