American Airlines Offering Targeted Bonuses For Travel From July Until End Of 2020

by joeheg

We received an email from American Airlines for an offer we’ve never seen before. I can’t help but think it’s because of the cash situation that the U.S. airlines are currently in. The currency they’re able to issue at no cost is miles in their loyalty programs.

The offer from American was pretty straightforward.

Dreaming of your next trip? When you book by May 18, 2020, you can earn an extra 500 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles on flights you take from July 1 to December 31, 2020. These miles are in addition to the miles you’ll already receive for flying, and you can earn up to 5,000 total bonus miles.

Earning 500 bonus miles might not seem like much, but for American Airlines, that’s a decent amount of miles to make while flying.

Ever since American has started awarding miles based on the price of your ticket and not the number of miles flown and awarding bonuses for higher-level Advantage members, base members (like me) hardly earn any miles for flying with American.

In fact, here’s our most recent one-way flight from Orlando to New York. The base price of the ticket, not including taxes and fees, was $111. As a base member, I earned 5 points per dollar spent or 555 redeemable miles for the flight.

If we could get 500 bonus miles, that would almost double the points earned for the flight.

An added bonus is that American is currently letting you change your flight until the end of the year with no change fees.

Book your travel by May 18 and fly from July 1 through December 31, 2020. You can change your reservation without change fees.

If you’re targeted and think you’ll be flying with American between July and the end of the year, this promotion could be a way to pick up some bonus miles. I’d just suggest booking your flights as one-ways instead of as a round trip because then you’ll receive 500 points for each segment. With there being no change fees, the downside of booking one-way tickets (higher change fees) is reduced and you’ll be able to maximize the points you’ll earn from the promotion.
