Learning How To Be A Tourist In New York City

by SharonKurheg

New Yorkers are a breed unto themselves. We (yep, me too. I lived in Brooklyn until I was 10 and Staten Island until well into adulthood) have been described as:

  • Aggressive
  • Fast-paced a-holes
  • Self-centered and rude
  • People who know what they want and they won’t stop until they get it
  • Rude and distant
  • People who know where they’re going and don’t mind elbowing a few people on the subway to get there
  • To the point, no fluff
  • Nicer than you think 🙂

And yeah, at times, we really are all those things and more ;-).

The thing is, tourists have no idea of how to fit into the world of New York City and especially New Yorkers. And then, when they get into a New Yorker’s way, they hear about it. But fortunately, someone has taken the time to make a few video guides help tourists so they’re not subjected to the wrath of aggressive, fast-paced a-holes of New Yorkers ;-).

Keep in mind that since this guy is a New Yorker, he’s going to tell it like it is. He may or may have some (mildly) NSFW language. But if you can get past that, I think you may get some really good advice about visiting New York City.

NYC tourist tips…

Tips for being on the subway…

And finally, for your listening pleasure…

(BTW, this may or may not be 100% true, except for the homeless guy in your apartment, LOL!)

As a New Yorker (also born/grew up in Brooklyn) the story I like to relate to my B&T friends and out of towners is that NYC is like a lot of small towns. I’ll be walking down the street and see someone I’ve known since I was a kid almost every day. You either nod and keep going or stop to catch up. It’s really no different.
